It’s a brand new year, which means it is the perfect time to get your stuff together and get organized to start the year off on the right foot!
Most people will focus on getting their kitchens and living rooms organized for the upcoming year. People will want to focus on the spaces where they spend the most time, however, a common space that most people forget about is their car. If you’re a commuter, a student, or a mama - you know you spend most of your time in that driver seat. Here are five tips that you’ll actually stick with throughout 2019 to keep your car orderly!
1. Use a Shoe Organizer as a mini catch-all for your backseat kiddos! Cut the shoe organizer to utilize one to three rows, depending on what you want to store in it and how much room your child has in the backseat. If they’re still in a car seat, you may only want to use one row to make sure they still have enough legroom. Clip your cutout to the back of the driver side and passenger seats using the original clips that come with it, or by using a Carabiner clip. Next comes the fun part, choose what you want to store! Make one pocket a cupholder for your child’s bottle or cup. Store a few extra diapers and wipes in another. Maybe one or two toys/electronics to keep the kids busy on you’re longer car rides, the possibilities are endless.

You can pick up a similar Shoe Organizer from Amazon or Target for about $8.99. Pro tip: label each compartment to teach your kids to put things back in the right spot! Giving a child a “job” and making that their task makes them want to do put things back! You can also scoop up a pack of 20 colorful Carabiner Clips from Amazon for just $7. This is an affordable and easy way to keep the kids’ clutter from taking over your backseat!

2. Empty Gum Container turned Piggy Bank! I don’t know about you, but I love the packs of gum that fit snuggly into your car’s cup holders. I like them so much, and buy them so frequently that I had to find a way to repurpose them once they’re empty. This is a perfect spot to store all that loose change that you dont want to end up at the bottom of your bags, on the floor, or worse - in the cracks of the seats. Store all the loose change in the empty gum container for easy access for parking meters, or for easy grabbing during your next trip to the CoinStar machine.
Personally, I use this hack for my loose change. But you could also repurpose this to help organize anything your little heart desires; like hair ties or receipts!
3. Glove Compartment Organization Maybe its just me - but my glove compartment could easily turn messy since it’s where I’ll store all the random clutter that I don’t want in my middle console. To avoid the glove compartment turning into a clutter-bomb, I like to utilize Ziploc bags to organize it. I always grab extra napkins at Starbucks or fast food restaurants and stick these into my glove compartment, cause you’ll always regret not having a napkin when you need one. Napkins get stored in my first Ziploc bag. I’ll also have another Ziploc filled with the random little things I may need during a car ride. Advil, a pen, tissues, extra contact lenses and some console cleaner go in that second Ziploc. This organizes all the stuff I like to store in there, with extra room for my car’s manual and registration/insurance documents. I store my registration and insurance cards in a little portfolio like this one to keep my glove compartment extra tidy.

4. Tidy Up that Junk in the Trunk Trunk storage to most people is important since it’s a place to store larger items when necessary - like sports equipment, groceries, but also extra supplies you may need like umbrellas, reusable shopping bags, etc. I personally, have a very small trunk, so I need to make sure I use that space efficiently. To make sure I’m able to keep all my necessary items stored away, but also keep room in case I need it, I like to use a clear small/medium storage bin to keep all my stuff in place. In the storage bin, I’ll keep a few reusable bags for groceries, a blanket, an extra t shirt, and two umbrellas. This helps keep it all from rolling around while I’m driving, but also helps me clear the rest of the trunk space free for when I need it. You can pick up a clear storage bin at Target or The Container Store. Pick a size that will help you store everything you want, but don’t get a bin that’s too large that it’ll take up that space you want to keep free for other items.
5. Door Compartment turned Sanitizer Storage Most people don’t know what to do with that door compartment storage since it’s a long and skinny space. Given this space remains empty for a lot of people, it’ll turn into a garbage can for random receipts, napkins, and wrappers. I like to utilize this space and store some hand Sanitizer and hand wipes. I feel this is a good space for this since it’s the first thing you see when entering your car, and last thing you see when exiting. You’ll likely use the hand sanitizer/wipes more often to keep the germs limited during this sniffle-season. I also like having this here for after I leave work, a department store, or the gym since these places are filled with bacteria and germs that I don’t want to bring home with me.
I hope these tips are helpful, and I hope you utilize them this year! Submit your photos on your interpretation of these tips if you use them!
